Preventing Burnout Through Exercise



Burnout is a serious issue that many working professionals face. It is a slippery slope that is easy to fall into and when you’re there (which I have been) it takes time, patience and a lot of self compassion to get back out. If you start noticing the signs of burnout, take early action to prevent it from getting worse. One way to help prevent burnout is with exercise.


Of note, this is focused on preventing burnout. So if you’re already experiencing burnout, do not feel pressured to start a workout routine! It could actually make things worse. Typically to manage burnout, rest is needed and movement should be focused on walks and low impact exercise until you’re feeling more rested. It is also a time to work on boundaries and find a schedule that works for you.

Now if you are working to prevent burnout, starting an exercise routine can actually help. Exercise is a great way to help manage stress, boost your energy and help with work/ life balance. It also gives you a space to have a different set of goals, meet new people and try something new. The best way to begin a new exercise routine is to ease into and find a schedule you enjoy. This could mean waking up earlier or adjusting your typical free time activities, but the benefits are worth it.


Reducing Stress Levels: Exercise has been proven to be an excellent stress reliever. Physical activity releases endorphins, commonly known as "feel-good" hormones, which boost mood and promote a sense of well-being. By engaging in physical activities you can find an outlet to release built-up tension and reduce stress levels. Regular exercise can help break the cycle of chronic stress, leading to a more balanced emotional state and decreased risk of burnout.


Enhancing Mental Resilience: One of the main causes of burnout is the feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to cope with daily challenges. Engaging in physical exercise not only strengthens our bodies, but also builds mental resilience. Having goals outside work is also beneficial to overall health as it also creates more space between work and life. Additionally, participating in group activities or sports can foster social connections, which further contribute to overall life satisfaction and reduce burnout risk.


Enhancing Self-Care Practices: Burnout often arises from neglecting our own well-being and consistently prioritizing external demands. Exercise is an act of self-care, and is a great place to start for incorporating more self care practices. Trust me, nothing feels better than getting done at the gym, taking a shower, and then putting on comfortable pajamas and calling it a day. Regular physical activity provides a structured and dedicated time to care for ourselves, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life.


In the face of burnout, exercise is a powerful preventive measure, offering physical and mental benefits. By reducing stress levels, enhancing mental resilience, boosting energy, promoting work-life balance, and facilitating self-care practices, regular physical activity becomes an essential tool for maintaining well-being and preventing burnout.
